Colonel Wayne G. Bunton began his law enforcement career in 1989 as a deputy sheriff employed by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Augusta, Georgia.
While there, he was promoted to investigator and served as a burglary investigator, homicide investigator, and then promoted to investigative sergeant over the Homicide Section.
In 2002, Colonel Bunton relocated to Florida and joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
He has served in several capacities to include patrol, Violent Crimes Section detective, Internal Affairs detective and supervisor, street crimes unit supervisor, lieutenant and captain in the Department of Detention Services, and captain in Patrol Services.
He currently serves as commander of the Department of Detention Services.
Colonel Bunton is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course and earned a degree from the Police Executive Leadership Graduate Program. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Leo University, and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Justice Administration from the University of Louisville.
