Colonel James Previtera
Colonel Jim Previtera assumed command of the Department of Operational Support in January 2013, after having commanded the Department of Detention Services for more than four years. Prior to his promotion Colonel Previtera served as a major overseeing the agency’s Training Division. During his tenure in training, Colonel Previtera oversaw the creation of the division and the construction of the Sheriff’s Training Center. He also implemented numerous changes to cadet and in-service training programs, including the creation of the Sheriff’s Orientation Training program known as SOT.
Colonel Previtera joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2005 after having served as a Special Agent with the United States Secret Service. During his time with the Secret Service Colonel Previtera served in the Tampa Field Office and as an instructor at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Beltsville, Maryland. Colonel Previtera was a member of the Vice Presidential Protection Division when he left to join the Sheriff’s Office.
Colonel Previtera began his law enforcement career in 1986 as a member of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. During his 11 years with the PCSO Colonel Previtera was assigned as a patrol deputy, narcotics detective, School Resource Officer and patrol supervisor. At the time of his departure to the Secret Service he was assigned to the Special Operations Division as the SWAT Team Liaison.
Colonel Previtera has taught extensively during his career for the Southeastern Public Safety Institute, the Multi-Jurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force and the Florida Sheriff’s Association Task Force. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from St. Leo College, and is a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Criminal Investigator Training Program; the Special Agent Training Course at the James J. Rowley Training Center; and the Senior Management Institute for Police. In 2011 Colonel Previtera attended the 246th Session of the FBI National Academy and was the elected leader of the class.
In his current capacity Colonel Previtera oversees the Homeland Security Division, Training Division, Community Outreach Division, Human Resources Bureau, Risk Management Bureau, General Services Bureau, and the Office of Legislative Affairs and Grants.
