Detective Larry McKinnon

Detective Larry McKinnon joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2007. He put his decades of law enforcement experience to work in patrol in eastern Hillsborough County. In 2009, Detective McKinnon was chosen by Sheriff Gee to expand and enhance the agency’s media relations.

Prior to his employment with the Sheriff’s Office, Detective McKinnon was a decorated officer with the Tampa Police Department.  He joined the police department in 1982. During his career at TPD, he served as patrol officer, field training officer, narcotics detective and as a member of the Selective Enforcement Bureau. He was also the corporal of the DUI Squad. He was assigned as a Tampa Police hostage negotiator for 11 years.

In 2005 he earned the prestigious Tampa Police Officer of The Year Award for his hard work, dedication and leadership role that helped reduce crime nearly 12 percent.  He retired from the Tampa Police Department and was hired as a civilian in the agency’s Public Information Office until his employment with HCSO.

Detective McKinnon is a Hillsborough County native and lives with his family in Brandon.
