Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Aviation and Marine Unit rescued two individuals that were stranded out in the Gulf after their kayaks overturned.
Shelly Valdez, DOB 8-3-70, address of 2216 Glen Mist Drive in Valrico was in a 11 ft. kayak and James Dixon, DOB 1-12-66 of the same address was in a 12 ft. kayak.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. today they set out from Apollo Beach Nature Park. At approximately 6:30 p.m. a large wave overturned both kayaks. Valdez was able to right her kayak and get back in it. Dixon was unable to right his kayak. He put his personal flotation device on and was able to hold on to Valdez' kayak. Valdez used her cell phone and called a family member who in turn contacted the Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit located the individuals approximately 1/2 to 1 mile off shore where Sheriff's Office Marine Unit rescued them. Both individuals as well as both kayaks were returned to the Apollo Beach Nature Park at approximately 7:30 p.m.
