The crime occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010. A woman arrived at Tims Memorial Prebyterian Church preschool and parked her car. She left her purse on the seat, locked her car and headed inside with her child. It would be for only a few minutes.

That was all the time that was needed for a notorious gang of burglars and thieves to pounce. The thief smashed the car window and snatched the woman’s purse. The good news is that there were witnesses. Deputies were summoned to the scene and learned of a description of the suspects’ vehicle: a silver Chrysler 300 sedan. Deputies sent out electronic alerts for the suspects and the car. The Sheriff’s Office helicopter was also called into action.

Deputies Ron Waller and Jay Bridwell, both licensed pilots, took to the skies. They were looking for a silver Chrysler. They checked the area around the day care center with no success. Then the deputies began an aerial grid search of major parking lots and roads from the Pasco County line to the city of Tampa. Acting on information from our Law Enforcement Intelligence Nexus Center, or LINC, the pilots zeroed in on motels. Within an hour of the crime, the pilots spotted a Chrysler 300 in the parking lot of  La Quinta Inn on North 30th Street in Tampa. They also saw a suspect matching the description from the witnesses removing items from the car’s trunk. The pilots directed patrol units to the scene, and deputies moved in for the arrests. Four suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Orient Road Jail.

The suspects are members of a criminal enterprise known as the Felony Lane Gang. This South-Florida based band of thugs and thieves has been traveling the state and Southeast, preying on victims’ vehicles parked at day care centers, shopping centers and other areas. The group targets purses and other valuables left inside vehicles, and then use the stolen credit cards and checks. Felony Lane Gang is so named because the group has been known to utilize the far, outside lane of bank drive-throughs so as to best conceal their identity when they cash stolen checks.

The suspects are believed to have committed other crimes in the Tampa Bay region, and investigations continue.
