The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is proud to introduce the Sheriff’s Rising Stars Leadership Academy. Twenty-six incoming high school seniors from public high schools in Hillsborough County were selected to participate in the academy which will begin on June 14th and conclude on June 18th. This weeklong experience enables each student to be exposed to principles that will enhance their ability to be a successful and responsible citizen. The experience is full of activities and examples of leadership to prepare these students for their school work and for their future careers. The week’s activities include guest speakers, such as Major General George W. Norwood, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) and Tampa Police Department Chief Jane Castor, hands-on team building exercises and visits to the HCSO’s Marine Unit, the Walter C. Heinrich Practical Training Site, the George E. Edgecomb Courthouse and the Florida Sheriffs Association Youth Ranch in Safety Harbor. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to help instill confidence in our youth and look forward to hosting more leadership academies in the future,” Sheriff David Gee said. The weeklong experience culminates in a graduation on Friday at the Falkenburg Road Jail Assembly Room. Upon completion of the academy, students will receive a $500 scholarship. The Sheriff’s Rising Stars Academy is funded through the Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Trust Fund. The money in the fund comes from the seized and forfeited assets of criminals and criminal organizations.
