Memorial Day Weekend Increased Patrol Enforcement
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office increases Memorial Day weekend DUI and Safety Belt enforcement.
May 28, 2010 at 6:00 a.m. Safety Belt Enforcement will begin at the corner of SR. 60 and Parsons Ave. in Brandon. Deputies will set up operations in the Walgreens parking lot.
May 28, 2010 from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m., DUI Sobriety Checkpoint at Bruce B. Downs Blvd and Skipper Ave. in Tampa.
Memorial Day weekend is traditionally one of the most deadly holidays for motorists. Many residents of Hillsborough County will celebrate this holiday with picnics, barbecues and road trips.
Sheriff David Gee is determined to keep impaired drivers off the road and insist that everyone is properly restrained with a seat belt or a child safety seat before starting your engine. Those two seconds could save your life or the life of someone you love.
The Florida Safety Belt Law (FSS 316.614) states "it's unlawful to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Florida unless each passenger and the operator are restrained by a safety belt or some type of approved child restraint device if the occupant is a child". The fines can range from $101.00 to $151.00 per person.
Since 2004, more than 175 people in Hillsborough County chose NOT to wear a seat belt and died in traffic crashes. Deputies have seen firsthand how effective using seatbelts and child safety seats are in reducing injuries and saving the lives of those involved in motor vehicle collisions.
Beginning Friday, May 28th 2010 at 6:00 a.m., HCSO will launch a Memorial Day weekend traffic safety initiative that will start with a safety belt enforcement operation at the corner Parsons Ave. and SR 60. Deputies will set up in the Walgreens parking lot and direct motorists in as they observe individuals in violation of Florida's Safety Belt Laws.
On Friday, May 28, 2010, starting at 10:00 p.m., deputies will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and E. Skipper Ave. Deputies will stop vehicles and make contact with the driver. If the deputy detects any signs of possible impairment, further investigation will be conducted to determine if the driver is too impaired to drive.
If the driver is determined to be impaired, the driver will be arrested, taken to jail and their car will be impounded.
To ensure we are doing everything we can to deter impaired driving, we are advertising these events in advance so drivers have plenty of time to arrange for a designated driver and buckle up.
Hillsborough County Deputies will then remain on aggressive patrols through the Memorial Day Holiday weekend searching for impaired drivers and enforcing Florida State Seat Belt Law.
Once again, before you head out for the long weekend, Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee reminds all motorists to drive safely, buckle up and if you drink please drink responsibly and arrange for a designated driver.
