A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s detention sergeant was arrested today for assaulting an inmate in the Orient Road Jail.
Michael Gonzalez, DOB 10/11/69, was charged with misdemeanor battery and booked into jail at 2:39 p.m. today.
The arrest stemmed from an incident on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 4:20 p.m. in a cell in Housing Unit 6 at the Orient Road Jail. The inmate, Mark P. Luft, DOB 12/18/89, had caused a disturbance in the jail booking area and was transferred to a jail housing unit. Gonzalez and at least two other deputies entered the cell to exchange the inmate’s standard jail uniform for a gown-type garment worn by inmates for their own protection. The inmate was prone on the floor and handcuffed at which time Gonzalez struck and kicked him in the face and head without provocation.
The inmate sustained minor injuries to his face and lip and was treated by medical staff at Orient Road Jail. He was transferred to Falkenburg Road Jail today for a second medical evaluation.
A deputy who witnessed the incident notified a jail commander a short time later, and a criminal investigation was initiated immediately.
When Gonzalez arrived today for his regularly assigned shift, he was relieved of his duties and questioned by Sheriff’s Internal Affairs detectives. Based on statements from witnesses and the inmate, Gonzalez was arrested at 2:30 p.m.
Gonzalez was hired as a detention deputy in 1990. Due to the pending administrative investigation there will be no additional comments about the incident.
Gonzalez was being on $500 bond.
