On September 29, 2010, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft detectives, while working a case, learned that Michael Ray Riddles had attempted to sell stolen property. The Auto Theft Section began looking into the allegation and as a result of their findings was able to obtain a court authorized search warrant for the property and home of Michael Riddles. One item that was reportedly in the possession of Riddles was a stolen Suzuki ATV (yellow and black in color). When detectives served the search warrant they located the stolen ATV in a shed located in Riddles' back yard. The ATV’s Vin numbers had been removed but detectives were able to identity the ATV as the stolen property.
While detectives were at Riddles' residence they learned of a second suspect that was possibly involved in the thefts, and that individual was riding down Trapnell Road on a lawn mower. Detectives responded to Trapnell Road where they observed a subject driving a lawn mower. Detectives attempted to stop the individual (Charles McDaniel), however he tried to elude detectives on his lawn mower. As detectives conducted a traffic stop, McDaniel threw a loaded .380 Kel Tec in the ditch. McDaniel is a convicted felon and the gun was stolen earlier in the year in Hillsborough County.
