1st degree murder with a firearm
On April 9, 2011 at approximately 1:00 a.m., the victim Courtney Yates and another individual got into a physical altercation at 12743 North 19th Street. The victim felt like he was being disrespected by the other individual (witness- and we will not be releasing his name) because he did not show Yates respect. Both subjects fought each other three times within approximately a fifteen minute period in front of other witnesses. After the final fight, both subjects shook hands and advised they were done. Both subjects left the area separately. Approximately ninety minutes later, both subjects came back to the listed area. Jontavis Williams which is a friend of the individual that had fought earlier with Yates was also at the location. Williams became upset when he found out that the victim was older than his friend, whom Yates had fought with. Williams pulled a gun from his waistband, and without any hesitation fired a shot at the victim from approximately six feet away striking the victim in his chest. The victim then turned to run at which time Williams fired again striking the victim in the back. The victim then was able to run a few feet away at which time he collapsed. Williams then walked over to the victim who was on the ground. The victim then according to witnesses began to beg the defendant not to shoot him anymore. Witnesses' then stated Williams stood over the victim and shot a third round into the victim's head at point blank range, immediately killing him. Williams then fled on foot from the scene.
At approximately 7:38 p.m. April 9. 2011 the suspect walked into the Sheriff's District One Office, 14102 North 20 Street, Tampa and turned himself in. He was taken into custody and charged with one count First Degree Murder.
