In two separate, unrelated investigations in less than a month, detectives with HCSO's Internet Predator Unit have arrested two men for possession of images that depict children engaged in sexually explicit activity on their home computers.
During the month-long investigation detectives served search warrants at the men's homes where computer equipment containing pornographic images of male and female children were found. All of the images seized were random photographs that were obtained over the Internet.
According to the US Department of Justice, producing child abuse images has now become easy and inexpensive. The Internet allows images and digitized movies to be reproduced and disseminated to tens of thousands of individuals at the click of a button.
The distribution and receipt of such images can be done almost anonymously. As a result, child pornography is readily available through virtually every Internet technology (web sites, email, instant messaging/ICQ, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), newsgroups/bulletin boards, and peer-to-peer. The technological ease, lack of expense, and anonymity in obtaining and distributing child pornography has resulted in an explosion in the availability, accessibility, and volume of child pornography.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will continue combating this nationwide growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and child pornography by arresting those individuals in Hillsborough County found with images that depict children engaged in sexually explicit activity.
