Hillsborough Detention Deputy Aided by Inmates
Deputy attacked by inmate is assisted by other inmates in the housing pod.
- November 11, 2011

On November 11, 2011, following a verbal altercation between two inmates, a female detention deputy attempted to place the aggressor in a holding cell and he resisted. With the deputy grasping his shirt front, the inmate struggled and became increasingly violent. In a matter of seconds, several other inmates rushed to the aid of the deputy and grasped the larger inmate and eventually physically carried him to the vestibule doors where additional responding deputies were arriving in response to the deputy's call for help.
There are two video angles relevant to the encounter; however, the actual confrontation is not in either view. The first view shows the pod and you can see inmates directing their attention toward the holding cell area (out of the camera shot), then several inmates sprinting toward the confrontation. The second camera shot of the exterior vestibule doors shows responding deputies waiting for the doors to be opened, and then the inmates who came to aid the deputy carrying the violent inmate to the vestibule and pushing him into the arms of the responders.
This is the second incident in the past two years where inmates have risen to the aid of a Hillsborough County detention deputy and again illustrates the mutual respect between the inmates and detention personnel. On November 2, 2009, inmates at the Orient Road Jail rescued Deputy Kenneth Moon from a deadly choke hold after he was attacked by an inmate.
