On Friday, December 30, at approximately 5:5:00 p.m., Rashad Hales knocked on the front door of the victim's residence to solicit business for ADT security. The victim opened the door and advised Hales her fiancée was at a friend's house and he handled those affairs.
Approximately 5-10 minutes later, Hales returned to the victim's home and again knocked on the door. When the victim answered, Hales told the victim he talked to her fiancée about signing up. The victim tried to close the door however Hales grabbed her wrist preventing her from closing the door. He then pushed his way inside the home and locked the door. Hales began beating and strangling the victim with his hands and an electrical chord, to the point he thought she was going to pass out, all while telling the victim he should kill her.
Hales eventually forced the victim to a back bedroom where he held and raped her. Hales then forced the victim to the kitchen where he armed himself with a kitchen knife and while holding a knife to the victim's throat, threatened to kill her if she told anyone. Hales then took the victim's cell phone a fled on foot.
The victim's boyfriend arrived back home shortly after the attack and called 9-1-1. Patrol deputies, K-9, and Air Service quickly responded and set up a perimeter. A short time passed and deputies spotted the suspect running.
Deputies with K9's tracked Hales and after a brief foot chase, he was captured in the parking lot of a Shell Gas Station located at 11203 Sheldon Road, Tampa.
Later during an interview with detectives, Hales admitted to this offense and regretted only that he did not kill the victim; he truly thought that she would not tell anyone which is why he did not kill her. Detectives also learned that Hales was legitimately working for Secure Watch (an authorized dealer for ADT) in the neighborhood going door to door.
The victim's was medically cleared and released. (Per FSS 119, there will not be any further information released on the victim or her condition.)
Rashad Hales was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail where he's being held without bond. Hales will have his first appearance in court tomorrow morning.
Detectives will continue with this investigation and request anyone who may recognize Rashad Hales and may have additional information or who may be a victim themselves, please contact HCSO at 813-247-8200.
