In 2010, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Child Protective Investigations Division received 47 reports of child deaths from the Florida Abuse Hotline. The results of the investigations concluded that the leading cause of child deaths was due to an unsafe sleep environment for the child. Improper bedding and caregiver co-sleeping were the most common contributing factors to these preventable tragedies.

Help lower the risk of your child by following these important preventive measures:
    • Caregivers should never be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when caring for children.
    • Sleeping with your child may put your child at risk. Your child should sleep alone.
    • Your child should sleep in their own crib, bassinet, or cradle, and not in adult beds, sofas, chairs, etc.
    • The safest sleep environment should not contain pillows, toys, crib bumpers, etc.
    • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be placed to sleep on their back.
