In the beginning of June 2011, Investigators with the Target Corporation contacted HCSO District 4 detectives and provided information about an individual stealing from multiple Target Stores and reselling the stolen property to D & L Paint & Auto Body, 401 E. Henderson Avenue in the City of Tampa. District 4 Detectives then initiated an undercover operation utilizing new merchandise provided by Target to sell as stolen merchandise to D & L Paint and Body Shop.
During the investigation, detectives began selling the stolen items to a suspect later identified as Dwight Wilson. Wilson soon began instructing undercover detectives on what types of stolen property he wanted so he could sell the items in the future.
After numerous hand to hand transactions with Wilson, a court authorized search warrant was executed and an estimated value of $8,000 to $10,000 in merchandise was recovered including twelve stolen bicycles several identified as being stolen from the Downtown Tampa and the Channelside District.
Also seized were two firearms, one of which was identified as being stolen during a residential burglary from the Brandon area. Narcotics were also found inside the business to include small quantities of crack and powder cocaine as well 62 grams of non-prescribed Vicodin medication. Tampa Police Department assisted in this investigation.
This unique and proactive approach to combating retail theft in our community could not have been accomplished without the commitment and partnership between the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Target Corporation.
The investigation continues with additional charges pending.
