    Details:

MetLife and the National Insurance Crime Bureau are partnering with Sheriff Gee and the Hillsborough Country Sheriff’s Office in the fight against insurance fraud in Florida, by donating two vehicles to the Sheriff’s office for use in undercover operations.
The donation is a timely one, as Florida currently leads the nation in auto insurance fraud. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Florida has three of the top five cities nationally for questionable medical claims associated with staged accidents — Tampa, Miami and Orlando. More than 3,000 staged accidents were reported in Florida between 2007 and 2009, more than twice the number reported by the state in the No. 2 spot, New York.
“Insurance fraud, whether committed by sophisticated criminal groups or other individuals, is an expensive burden on the Florida economy. We are committed to assisting law enforcement in their efforts to investigate and prosecute those that harm innocent Floridians by staging auto accidents.” Said Ron Poindexter, Area Director, National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Since 1985, MetLife has maintained a dedicated unit that detects and investigates suspicious insurance claims in an effort to assist law enforcement and control costs for policyholders.

“This isn’t just an insurance company problem; it affects every consumer in Florida. The abuse of the no-fault personal injury auto insurance system is a major problem in the Tampa Bay area,” said John Sargent, Director, Special Investigation Unit, MetLife. “Our efforts to control fraud will help keep overall insurance rates down and protect our customers”.
