On May 18, 2011 at approximately 11:30 p.m., at 13702 North 21 Street, apartment E, the victim was found unresponsive by the defendant. The victim was subsequently transported by Emergency Medical Services to University Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was observed to have multiple bruises about his face and body. The defendant/live in boyfriend of the victim’s mother was interviewed by detectives. Post Miranda, the defendant stated that he became angry at the victim’s mother and intended to throw the victim onto the bed, however the victim struck a dresser located within the bedroom. The edge of the dresser struck the victim’s abdominal area. The defendant then stated that he then placed the victim in the bed on his stomach. As the victim would not stop crying, the defendant intentionally struck him twice on his back. The defendant stated that while the above listed offenses were committed, the victim’s mother was not present in the residence, and that the defendant had sole custody of the victim. An autopsy of the victim was completed by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office, which revealed the cause of death to be blunt impact trauma to the head and torso with lacerations of the liver and spleen. The manner of death is homicide.
