HCSO Deputy Lyonelle De Veaux
5 year veteran
Assigned to Uniformed Patrol District 3
4747 W. Waters Avenue, Apt #306
On September 30, 2011 at 10:22 p.m. Deputy De Veaux responded to a 911 call at 4747 Waters Avenue. Deputy De Veaux made contact with Jessica Gipson and learned that she had been involved in a domestic disturbance with her boyfriend. Deputy De Veaux had put Gipson in the back of her patrol vehicle to speak with her, when she was confronted by the suspect, Matthew Buendia. Deputy De Veaux asked Buendia to step back. As Buendia stepped back, he pulled a firearm from beneath his shirt and fired upon Deputy De Veaux. Deputy De Veaux was struck three times.
Deputy De Veaux called for backup which arrived within minutes. Meanwhile Buendia barricaded himself within his apartment. Deputies attempted to make contact with Buendia, but he did not respond. At approximately 3:30 a.m., Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies made entry into the apartment. The suspect was located unconscious in a small closet near one of the apartment bedrooms. Buendia was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital and has been booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
Deputy De Veaux is recovering and in good condition.
