Annual Christmas Toy Drive:
As families gather for the holidays, more than 100 Hillsborough County children will visit their parents in a more restricted setting - monitored by court officials and security. Judges order these visitations in criminal, domestic violence, family law and dependency cases. Some of the children live in foster homes - others are at the center of a custody dispute. The majority of the kids are under 12 years-old. Some of these children are victims of abuse or witnesses of crime.
The court-ordered meetings take place at the Children's Justice Center in downtown Tampa. Every year, to generate some holiday spirit for these visitations, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office courthouse employees organize an annual toy drive. This year, they collected gifts for 107 children - every single child in the program. On Friday, courthouse deputies, HCSO administrators and other staff will wrap all the presents. Children will receive a gift during their next scheduled visit with their parent(s). For the most part, the presents will be a surprise. Sheriff's Office employees spent the last month collecting all the gifts.
The Children's Justice Center, located at 700 E. Twiggs Avenue, provides a safe environment for these visits. More than 3000 supervised visits are conducted at the CJC facility every year.
