On December 15, 2012, at approximately 1:45 pm, the victim Jonathan Acree was standing in the front yard of 6427 Black Dairy Road, Lot # 9 talking to a friend. The suspect, Jarrett Brooks approached Acree from behind and struck Acree in the head and neck multiple times with a hammer. EMS transported the victim to Brandon Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Jarrett Brooks fled back to his residence (lot #5) where he barricaded himself and refused to surrender to deputies. HCSO SWAT and Crisis Negotiators responded to the scene and for the next couple of hours attempts were made to make contact with Brooks with no response.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., chemical agents were shot into the residence and within several minutes, Brooks walked out of his residence and surrendered. There was no one else in the trailer.
Detectives are still trying to determine what motivated this attack and what past involvement the two men may have had together.
There were no other injuries and the approximately 100 residents that were temporarily evacuated were allowed to return to their homes.
