As the bar closed at 3 a.m. Saturday morning December 22nd, a verbal fight
over a woman's lost purse erupted inside the Boomerang Martini Bar. The purse
belonged to the girlfriend of Louis Kuilan-Maysonet (DOB 3-10-84). The fight
spilled into the parking lot, where Kuilan-Maysonet started arguing with
Christopher Gonzalez-Cartagena (DOB 10-23-83), although it is unclear if the
two men were feuding over the missing purse. At that point, Kuilan-Maysonet
lifted his shirt and flashed a handgun in his waistband while
Gonzalez-Cartagena attempted to walk to his car. As he neared his car,
investigators say Kuilan-Maysonet started shooting at him. Gonzalez-Cartagena
suffered several gunshot wounds, including a graze to the head. During the
shooting, a security guard for Boomerang's, Andre Jennings (DOB 7-30-87) was
directing traffic. When Jennings heard gunshots, he turned and witnessed the
shooting. Jennings ordered Kuilan-Maysonet to stop shooting, but
Kuilan-Maysonet spun towards Jennings with the gun in his hands. Jennings then
fired his own gun several times, shooting Kuilan-Maysonet. During the scuffle,
a bar patron, Alejandro Salavarrieta (DOB 6/3/90) having nothing to do with
the confrontation, was shot in the leg. At this stage in the investigation,
it's unclear who shot him. Kuilan-Maysonet was taken to Brandon Regional
Hospital, where he died. The other two victims were taken to Tampa General
Hospital for treatment. Andre Jennings, the security guard at Boomerang's, is
fully licensed with a valid concealed weapons permit. For now, the case
continues to be investigated and the State Attorney's Office will review
whether any charges will be filed.
