Gloria Davis Wong
12401 Orange Grove Drive, Apt #114
At approximately 7:00 a.m. HCSO received a 911 call from a caller who indicated a man was trying to set a woman on fire at 12401 Orange Grove Drive, Country Wood Apartment Complex in Tampa. When deputies arrived they found Matthew Wong critically burned lying on the lawn.
During the preceding investigation, detectives have determined the following preliminary details. Matthew Wong and Gloria Davis Wong have been married for the past 25 years and recently separated this past October 2011. Today at 7:00 a.m., Matthew Wong drove to the Country Club Apartments in a rental car and was parked near Gloria Wong's vehicle waiting for her to leave for work.
Gloria Wong came out of her apartment and was getting in her car when she spotted her husband walking towards her holding two bleach bottles and threatening to kill her.
Gloria Wong turned to run and Matthew Wong began chasing her through the apartment complex. Gloria screamed for help and continued running as Matthew Wong tried dousing her with gasoline from the bleach bottles. While trying to douse his wife with gasoline, he only managed to douse himself while he was running.
A neighbor in the apartment complex could hear Gloria Wong's screams and opened her door allowing Wong safe refuge.
Matthew Wong was still intent in harming his wife so he doused the apartment his wife was hiding in with the remaining gasoline. Wong then lit the gasoline lighting the front entrance-way on fire. The flash from that fire blew back onto Wong which lit and fully engulfed him in flames.
Wong fell to the ground burning when neighbors came out with fire extinguishers and blankets and extinguished the fire. Wong was taken to Tampa General Hospital burn unit where he is currently listed in critical condition.
Gloria Wong was not injured.
Detectives later discovered Matthew Wong's vehicle in the parking lot and saw it had black garbage bags taped to the rear side windows, and a blanket taped to the back window. Wong also had a two and a half gallon gas can, hand gloves and a roll of tape inside the car.
This investigation continues.
