On January 1, 2012 at approximately 1:00 am, HCSO was notified that a child had been shot while standing in his front yard located at 415 14th Ave SE in Ruskin.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that during the evening, the victim and his family were sitting outside their home watching fireworks being shot off in the area neighborhood.
Just after 1:00 am, the victim and his mother were still outside when she saw her son fall to the ground bleeding from his nose and eyes. At that moment, she wasn't aware that her son had been shot, however she new it was some type of serious medical issue so she drove him to South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center.
Once at South Bay Hospital, doctors quickly determined that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound that entered the top of his head and he was rushed to Tampa General Hospital where he remains in critical condition with the bullet still lodged in his head.
Detectives have interviewed the child's family members as well as the neighbors and have determined no one in the immediate area was firing a gun. It appears at this time that the victim was shot from celebratory gunfire falling from the sky from a distance that could range for miles away.
The investigation is still on going and detectives would like to talk to anyone who may know of someone in the area of Ruskin who may have been firing any type of firearms into the air during the New Years celebration. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200.
