On January 20, 2012 at approximately 2:00 p.m. the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 emergency call in reference to a shooting in the area of 1412 Mohrlake Drive in Brandon. Deputies arrived on scene and discovered the victim, Daniel Drake bleeding from the head and mouth. The victim was transported to Tampa General Hospital and was determined to have a single gunshot wound to the head. The bullet was later removed during surgery. The victim is listed in critical condition within the intensive care unit.
During the investigation, deputies interviewed several witnesses and discovered the defendant, Gerald Jones and the victim were engaged in a drug transaction while inside the victim’s vehicle parked in the driveway of 1412 Mohrlake Drive. During that time, the victim and defendant engaged in a physical altercation and the defendant produced a pistol and threatened to kill the victim. The victim and defendant continued to engage in a physical altercation. Following the altercation, the defendant removed an unknown amount of marijuana from the victim’s vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. The victim followed after the defendant and engaged in another altercation. The defendant then discharged his firearm multiple times, shooting the victim once through the head. The defendant was positively identified by witnesses as the person who committed the offense.
Jones was taken into custody on January 27, 2012 and charged with Attempted Felony Murder with a firearm.
