Electrical Fire At Falkenburg Jail
More than 160 inmates were moved following fire.

- 520 Falkenburg Road
- Tampa, Florida
An electrical fire at the Falkenberg Road jail prompted the evacuation of more than 160 inmates at shortly before 1 a.m. Monday morning. Deputies responding to a fire alarm found an electrical panel engulfed in flames and used fire fighting equipment to extinguish the flames before Hillsborough Fire Rescue arrived at the facility. Although the fire occurred in an inmate housing unit, no one was injured and the flames never left the mechanical room.
Still, more than 160 inmates were displaced by the incident when electrical service to the building was terminated. The inmates were moved elsewhere in the Jail without incident and the entire matter concluded before 2 a.m.
The housing unit is expected to remain closed for several days while engineers determine the cause of the fire and replace the burned equipment. The fire is believed to be connected to a lightning strike and power outage that occurred
at the jail during heavy thunderstorms Sunday evening.
Preliminary estimates placed the damage estimate at $5,000.00.
