On July 21, 2012 at approximately 2:00 a.m., the victim and the defendant (who reside together as roommates) became involved in a physical altercation. At approximately, 11:30 a.m. detectives were called to the apartment in reference to a deceased Hispanic male. One of the five individuals that reside at the apartment discovered the deceased in a locked bedroom when the victim did not open the door. The victim was discovered deceased with trauma to the upper body.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the suspect had fled the Tampa area to Sarasota County and had discarded the murder weapon (machete) in a nearby public trash can, which was later discovered by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Department. The defendant then purchased a bus ticket to Mexico and boarded a bus in Wimauma with one stop in Ocala. On July 22, 2012, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and dispatched deputies, who detained the suspect until Hillsborough detectives could arrive in Ocala.
