- Leaving the Scene of a Traffic Crash Involving Death

Why/How: On December 28, 2013, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Mac C. Joiner walked into the lobby of the Orient Road Jail and identified himself as the person who was driving the vehicle that struck Thomas Woods on S. Parsons Ave in Seffner. According to the detective, Mac Joiner was driving his 1995 Blue Dodge Dakota pick up truck northbound on Parsons Ave, when he observed Thomas Woods standing on the east side of the road but was unable to avoid hitting him. Joiner stuck Woods with the pick up truck knocking Woods into a grassy area and then fled from the scene without rendering aid or notifying law enforcement. Woods suffered fatal injuries from the crash and died at the scene.
Joiner was aware of the massive media attention and elected to turn himself into the Orient Road Jail.
Joiner admitted to the offense and provided the location of his truck which exhibited damage consistent with the crash event.
On December 28, 2013 at 12:12 a.m., a motorist called HCSO 9-1-1 and stated there was a man laying in the grass along the eastside of S. Parsons Avenue, approximately 1/4 mile south of Old East Hillsborough Ave in Seffner. Preliminary information indicated that the victim who has been positively identified as Thomas Woods was walking northbound on Parsons Avenue along the east side of the roadway when an unknown make and model vehicle traveling north on Parsons Avenue struck him and knocked him to the side of the road. Woods was critically injured from the impact and died at the scene. The suspect vehicle fled from the scene before Woods was discovered.
