Woman is struck by a train.
- February 15, 2013
- Time: 8:30 PM
- 122nc Avenue and 11th Street
- Tampa, Florida
On February 15, 2013 at approximately 8:30 p.m., HCSO was notified that a female pedestrian had been struck by a train near 122nd Ave and 11th Street in North Tampa. When deputies arrived, they met the victim's boyfriend and found the body of a deceased adult female.
Detectives responded to the scene and after examining crime scene evidence and conducting interviews, they have determined the following preliminary information. The victim and her boyfriend who are homeless were walking along the RR tracks when they decided to crawl underneath the train to get to the other side and avoid walking several thousand feet to go around the front of the train.
The victim's boyfriend went first and when the victim followed behind him, the train began moving forward. The victim was struck by a wheel and died at the scene.
At the time of this incident, the train had momentarily stopped to activate a manual switch just south of Fletcher Ave. This was consistent with the boyfriend's interview and details about the train being stopped and then surging forward.
After the victim was struck, the train continued north approximately 10 miles not knowing that the subjects had crawled under the train and the female had been run over. HCSO is working closely with CSX investigators as the investigation continues.
