    • Bird Island and the Alafia River

    Marine Deputies:

    • Marine Deputy Allen Dekle a 20 year veteran
    • Marine Deputy Neil Kenney a 16 year veteran

On February 16, 2013, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Hillsborough County Marine Unit was dispatched to stranded boaters that ran aground between Bird Island and the Alafia River. Marine deputies Dekle and Kenney responded to the south side of the island due to the north side was to shallow and the high winds and rough seas would make it impossible to recover the individuals. Deputies were in contact by phone with the individuals, they advised deputies that they were no longer on their boat but on the island and they were very wet and very cold. Deputies Dekle and Kenney were able to get the boat close to the island and the two individuals and their dog walked in three feet of water to the HCSO boat. They were transported back to Williams Park.
