On January 9, 2013 at approximately 5:30 p.m., three undercover detectives were investigating the sale of crack cocaine in the area of 122nd Avenue and 15th Street in Tampa. This was in response to citizen complaints of narcotic sales in the neighborhood.
Detectives eventually arrived at the apartment complex at 122nd Avenue and 15th Street. An undercover detective, whose name will not be released because of the nature of his work, was posing as a buyer when he attempted to make a transaction with a man believed to be conducting crack cocaine sales. During the deal, the suspect attempted to rob the detective and a physical fight broke out between the suspect and the detective. During the struggle the detective's gun was dislodged and both men fell down an outside stairwell, both trying to get control of the gun. While they struggled, the detective's gun fired several rounds. It is yet to be determined if any of those rounds hit the suspect. Two backup detectives monitoring the situation heard the confrontation in the stairwell and went in to assist. The two backup detectives identified themselves as members of the Sheriff's Office and instructed the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect refused to comply, and because the detectives were already in fear that the detective in the stairwell had been shot and would be shot again, they fire at the suspect. The backup detectives fired several rounds, shooting and killing the suspect at the scene. The undercover detective was taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office assisted with the investigation.
The three undercover detectives will be placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation is completed per HCSO policy.
