On July 1, 2012 at approximately 5:18 p.m., detectives responded to a vacant field in the area of Pine Street and Homerville Lane in Seffner in reference to a deceased person that had been discovered. The deceased was found fully clothed and with a “crack” pipe in his mouth. The body was turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. On July 2, 2012, the Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the victim and determined the cause of death to be homicidal violence. The victim had suffered upper body trauma and through investigative leads and collected evidence, the suspect David Choppa was identified. On January 4, 2013, a warrant was issued for Choppa for Second Degree Murder, Tampering with Evidence and Petit Theft. Deputies arrested Choppa at his residence on January 4, 2013.
