    • 10-year-old child

On October 21, 2013 at 5:40 pm, Randall Simmons (Uncle), was seated in the 3rd row of a 1998 Ford SUV that was parked in a parking lot at 9017 E. Adamo Drive in Tampa. Simmons was in possession of a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun and showed it to a 4-year-old child also seated in the van along with another 8-year-old child.

Simmons then exited the vehicle to go inside a cellular telephone store and left the gun in a small compartment, which was within reach of the children.  The 4-year-old child retrieved the handgun and began to play with it. The gun discharged and the bullet traveled through the seat in front, striking Shantell Wilson (Aunt) in the center of her back. Simmons returned to the vehicle, after seeing a commotion outside at the vehicle. He was accompanied by Antonio Wilson (Cousin) as they approached the vehicle. Moments later, Simmons and Wilson walked away with the children and fled the scene. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue transported Shantell Wilson to Tampa General Hospital where she was treated released the following day. Throughout the initial part of the investigation, Shantell Wilson and the driver of the vehicle, Deborah Rivers (Grandmother), were uncooperative and refused to provide pertinent details of the case. Over the next three days, detectives were able to identify all of the persons involved and ultimately obtained an arrest warrant on Randall Simmons.

The victim was released from the hospital the following day. The Child Protective Investigations Division also assisted with the investigation.

The investigation continues with additional charges pending.
