Sheriff’s Office Donates Horses to Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches:

On Tuesday, April 1st, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will turn over six (6) healthy horses to representatives of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to be transported to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch at Live Oak. The horses will be cared for by youth at the Boys Ranch and become part of their equestrian program.

On January 17 and 30th, the Sheriff’s Office took custody of a total of five (5) horses during an investigation of animal cruelty in Wimauma (criminal charges are pending). The horses, owned by the same individual, suffered from malnourishment and mistreatment and were grossly underweight. The Sheriff’s Office filed legal documents with the courts to seize the animals permanently; however, the owner voluntarily relinquished ownership to the Sheriff’s Office without the need for the court’s action. Members of the Sheriff’s Office Agriculture Unit worked with veterinarians to nurse the animals back to health and on March 22nd one of the mares gave birth to a healthy colt who the deputies named, J.J.

Representatives of the Youth Ranches will be available to provide more information and media will be allowed to film the horses being loaded for transport. J.J. is likely being the hit of the show! Please plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. Enter the range property and go to the stop sign, then turn right and proceed to the edge of the driver training area.

Additional Information about Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches:

The cornerstone and pride of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is its nationally renowned network of residential child-care campuses, an array of cottages and villas scattered throughout the state of Florida offering a stable home to needy children. By utilizing the Boys Ranch/Live Oak, Youth Villa/Bartow, Youth Ranch/Safety Harbor and Youth Ranch-Bradenton/Sarasota, the Youth Ranches trained and devoted staff is well-equipped to nurture needy, neglected boys and girls, and provide a warm sense of security, guidance and tenderness. Youth are cared for by "cottage parents," who help develop a strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, teamwork and respect in each boy and girl.
