Historical Display Honoring Sergeant Ben Wilder:
On February 6, 2014, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will be unveiling the historical display honoring Sergeant Ben Wilder who was killed in the line of duty in July of 1962.
Sergeant Wilder's widow, Dorothy Wilder Alster, donated many of the items in the display. She and her children will be in attendance, as well as some retired deputies who were at the scene in 1962.
The displays will depict the events that happened that day and highlight newspaper articles and photos from the crime scene.
On that fateful day, Sergeant Ben Wilder, PCPD officers and HCSO deputies responded to Wiggins Rd. in Plant City to pick up a subject wanted for shooting his father-in-law earlier in the day. Sergeant Wilder was shot and killed while he was standing at the front door and Deputy Perry Young received devastating injuries from a second shotgun blast. The suspect was later killed in a gun battle with deputies at the scene.
