On January, 22, 2014 at 12:45 p.m., Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call with information that a man had been run over by a van at 4422 Pine Street in Valrico.
When deputies and paramedics arrived, they found Timothy Sanderson lodge underneath the 1999 Ford van. Paramedics with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue examined Sanderson and pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Traffic Homicide detectives and Crime Scene technicians were dispatched to the scene where they began conducting a traffic crash investigation. The following preliminary information is based on current information known at the time of this release. This includes information from three independent witnesses' who were interviewed at the scene.
Sanderson spotted Stokes in the neighborhood and approached him as Stokes stood outside his van. The two men began arguing and Stokes decided to get in his van and leave. Stokes was preparing to drive away with two other occupants inside his van when Sanderson reportedly punched Stokes once in the face through the driver's open window.
A neighbor present during the altercation physically restrained Sanderson preventing him from further assaulting Stokes. Stokes immediate drove away and was driving along the dirt road loop trying to make his way back out to Pine Street when Sanderson began running towards Stokes trying to catch up to the van.
Sanderson intercepted Stokes at the entrance to the loop and jumped in front of the van in an apparent attempted to stop Stokes from leaving. Stokes attempted to stop the van but was unable before he struck Sanderson with the front of his van in the middle of the dirt road.
The impact pulled Sanderson underneath the van where he died. Stokes waited on scene until deputies arrived. Two witnesses of this event corroborated Stokes and his two passenger's version of what happened as well as the witness who originally restrained Sanderson during the assault on Stokes through the van window.
The van was impounded as evidence and Stokes was released from the scene with no charges at this time pending further investigation.
