The suspect in the robberies disguised himself in an attempt to conceal his identity.
Matthew Donald Maxwell
Between November 2013 and June 2014, a series of bank robberies occurred throughout the central Florida area. The suspect in the robberies was a white male, who disguised himself in an attempt to conceal his identity. In July 2014, Crime Stoppers received a tip regarding a possible suspect and provided it to law enforcement. Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa Bay Regional Office of Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation determined that the suspect identified in the tip, Matthew Donald Maxwell, DOB 4-3-85, fit the profile for the suspect in the series of robberies. Information was provided to detectives with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office who were able to have two witnesses from a November 2013 robbery positively identify Maxwell via a photo line-up. Sarasota County detectives subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for Maxwell on July 28, 2014 for Bank Robbery. Information was obtained from a source that Maxwell was on vacation in Atlanta, Georgia and he was located and taken into custody there on July 30, 2014 by Atlanta law enforcement. After his arrest, a court authorized search warrant was obtained for Maxwell's residence in Sulphur Springs area of Tampa and served by personnel with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's, Tampa Bay Regional Area of Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tampa Police Department and Clearwater Police Department. During the search, investigators located a large sum of money in a secret compartment within the residence, along with several other items of evidentiary value.
Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Sarasota County Sheriff's Office responded to Atlanta on July 30, 2014 and interviewed Maxwell, who made a full confession to numerous bank robberies in the area.
Maxwell is being held in Atlanta, Georgia awaiting extradition. The investigation continues.
