Matthew William McLean

Between March 21 and March 23, 2014, Matthew McLean traveled from the area of Minneapolis, Minnesota to Tampa to meet with a 14-year-old female that he had been communicating online via Facebook, Skype and KIK. They corresponded for more than six months. McLean made plans to meet the victim in Florida and then travel to Mexico.
Between March 22 at 11:30 p.m. and March 23 at 8:30 a.m., McLean met the juvenile near her residence in Tampa. The juvenile and McLean went to the Greyhound bus station in Tampa where McLean purchased two tickets for Brownsville, Texas. This was done without the parents’ knowledge or consent. The pair boarded a Greyhound bus bound for Brownsville, Texas at approximately 5:45 p.m.
On March 23, 2014, the juvenile’s parents discovered her missing from her bedroom and contacted deputies. The juvenile had never previously runaway. Detectives made contact with the juvenile’s friends. They determined she had been communicating with a man online. Detectives identified the man that the juvenile was communicating with to be Matthew McLean. Further investigation revealed that McLean is a registered sex offender in Minneapolis, Minnesota. McLean is on active felony probation with the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Investigative leads obtained by detectives located the individuals at 1:20 a.m. at the Greyhound Bus terminal in Tallahassee. Tallahassee Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol responded and located both individuals on the bus. McLean was taken into custody without incident for an outstanding warrant for absconding from probation on a sexual conduct charge from Minnesota. The juvenile was reunited with her parents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now assisting in this investigation.
