    Details:

In order to combat murders, violent crimes, firearms related crimes, and the sale of illegal narcotics, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division (SID) initiated a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) investigation in August of 2013 that became known as Operation SURrender. As a result of this investigation, five Sur 13 gang members were arrested on March 25, 2014. Two other members were already serving time for previous charges and new charges were added.

The goal of the operation was to target the Sureños Criminal Street Gang members (A.K.A. Sur 13). For the purpose of clarification, the word Sureños is a Spanish term for southerner, which refers to southern California, the originating location of the Sureños Criminal Street Gang. The Sureño name, related to this investigation, is based off of the original southern California Criminal Street Gang. Like all criminal street gangs, the Sureños primary activity is criminal in nature. Within the Tampa Bay area, the Sureños gang has used firearms to protect and promote their criminal activity, most notably their illegal narcotics trade. The Sureños have also utilized firearms during the commission of criminal acts such as Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Aggravated Battery and Homicide.

The goal of this investigation was to locate, target and arrest members of the Sureños or Sur 13 Criminal Street Gang who have continued to commit criminal gang-related acts. The arrest, prosecution and subsequent incarceration of these members will result in the disruption of organized illegal narcotics sales and violent crimes that have plagued the local community. The ultimate objective of this operation, which parallels our agency’s mission statement, is to improve safety and return order and control to the law-abiding citizens of our community.
