At approximately 12:30 am, HCSO received a call regarding shots fired in the area of the 9400 block of Greystone Road in Thonotosassa. Three deputies arrived on scene and were on foot checking the area when they were met by a black male who pulled a handgun and fired at least one round. The bullet struck Deputy Scott Ranney once in the leg and was subsequently transported to Tampa General Hospital. The suspect fled the scene on foot.
Several hours after the shooting, Deputy Ranney was released from the hospital and sent home to begin his recovery period before returning back to work.
Deputy Ranney has been employed with HCSO since July 2009 as a detention deputy. In December 2014, he transitioned to a law enforcement deputy and was assigned to Patrol District 1.
