On February 17, 2015 at 5:32 p.m., Maximiliano Vargas displayed belligerent behavior and threatened customers at Westfield Brandon, located at 459 Brandon Town Center Drive. His behavior disrupted normal mall operations and frightened customers. A victim asked him to leave the premises. Vargas refused and pulled out a four-inch pocket knife. He advanced towards the victim, threatening to kill him. The victim placed a barricade between himself and the defendant while yelling for him to stop. Vargas eventually exited the mall and entered a Hartline bus. While on the bus, Vargas became combative with the bus driver. He pulled out his knife and threatened to kill everyone on the bus. Deputies responded to the area of Gornto Lake Road S and Causeway Boulevard where the bus was stopped. While trying to detain Vargas, he forcefully grabbed Corporal Scott Morrill. Upon contact with deputies, Vargas had bloodshot watery eyes, an odor of alcoholic beverage and admitted to having several alcoholic beverages.
