On June 2, 2015 at approximately 8:30 am, the victim and her friend were walking to their school bus stop at Valleydale Drive and Amberdale Court in Riverview when Butts who was wearing a ski mask, ran up from behind and snatched the cell phone from her hand.
A parent who was walking with their child to the school bus stop recognized Butts who had removed the ski mask as he fled from the scene. Deputies responded and quickly set up a perimeter of the area and began searching for Butts.
Deputies soon spotted Butts running through the neighborhood homes before he was eventually apprehended in a wooded area behind Spoto High School. Spoto High School was put on lock down for a brief period during this incident.
The victim's stolen cell phone was recovered when Butts pointed it out stashed under a barbecue grill behind a home near the scene. Butts was booked into the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center and later released to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Te'Jahn Butts was recently arrested on May 15, 2015 in the robbery of Spoto High School prom funds. Butts was released to his mother hours after that arrest.
