    Details:

Traffic Homicide detectives investigating the crash that had occurred on November 4, 2015, learned that the two vehicles were racing (Hamilton and Repass). Detectives learned the second vehicle involved was also a white Toyota Scion. Through further investigation, detectives learned the driver was Dennis Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was initially interviewed and considered as a potential witness at the time.

The defendant (Hamilton) advised the victim (Repass) challenged him to a race while in the parking lot of 2224 Bloomingdale Avenue West. The defendant stated they were westbound on Bloomingdale Avenue and he was in the inside lane and the victim was in the outside lane. The defendant stated the victim reached speeds of 70-80 miles per hour and he reached speeds of 55-60 miles per hour. The posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

He also advised he had a passenger in his vehicle at the time of the incident. On January 15, 2016, the passenger admitted the vehicles were racing and the defendant made an unsafe lane change cutting off the victim as he was within one car length of the victim's vehicle. At the time of the lane change they heard a clunk behind them which they assumed was caused by the vehicle's gears grinding. The passenger and the defendant returned to the scene and realized the vehicle they were racing with had crashed but failed to notify law enforcement. The reckless operation of the defendant's vehicle by the defendant contributed to crash. As a result of the ongoing investigation, Hamilton was arrested on June 14, 2016 charged with Leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
