    3 juveniles charged with misdemeanors

    Details:

During the last 60 days, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office investigated several vehicle thefts within the southern part of Hillsborough County, within District IV. During that time frame, a total of 46 vehicles were reported stolen (41 of them recovered in the southern part of the county). Areas targeted by the offenders were residential subdivisions in the southern part of the county and businesses along Bloomingdale Avenue.

The majority of the vehicle thefts occurred during nighttime residential burglary sprees, referred to as “car hopping.” During these incidents, juveniles walked down a residential street and attempted to open car doors. Once inside the vehicle, the juveniles stole a range of items and, if the keys were in the vehicle, the vehicle itself.

The following statistics were gathered during the investigations conducted by deputies and detectives:
    • All 46 of the vehicles stolen were left unlocked by the victims.
    • Of the 46 vehicles unlocked, 42 of the vehicles had the keys left inside. In the 4 cases the vehicle didn't have the keys inside, the keys were located within another vehicle in the driveway.
    • Deputies have made 14 arrests during this time frame for auto-theft-related offenses.
    • The average age of the arrestees is approximately 15-20 years of age, with the majority of the suspects being juveniles. These arrests have resulted in over 50 total felony charges.
    • During these investigations, 4 firearms were stolen after being left in the vehicles by the victims. All of those firearms were recovered by deputies when contact was made with the suspects.
