On October 4, 2016 at approximately 2:54 pm, Isaias Salgado was observed recklessly driving a 2012 Chevy Silverado at the intersection of I-75 and Gibsonton Drive. The Silverado took a left turn from a “turn right only” lane on the off-ramp, at a high rate of speed. Traffic was stopped for the red light when Salgado drove through the intersection, violating the red light. Salgado was swerving in and out of traffic, using the outside grass shoulder of the roadway, when he struck the rear of 2007 Ford Escape, driven by Francisco Guzman. The Ford Escape overturned onto its roof into a nearby ditch of grass and water.
Following the impact with the Ford Escape, Salgado swerved across the eastbound lanes of Gibsonton Drive and lost control striking a 2012 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Claudia Cecilia Lopez Palacios. Lopez Palacios was able to bring the Ford F-150 to a controlled stop in the median turn lane. Salgado slid off the southwest corner of Gibsonton Drive and Water Works Lane coming to rest facing westward in a ditch. Salgado then fled the vehicle on foot and ran to Lowe's located at 10425 Gibsonton Drive in Riverview. He opened the passenger door of a 2001 Mercury Sable and got into the vehicle. The driver asked Salgado to get out of the vehicle as Salgado attempted to start the vehicle. After unsuccessful attempts, Salgado fled.
He then entered a 2014 Suzuki Kizashi from the passenger side and attempted to start the vehicle. As the driver and Salgado struggled over the keys, the vehicle was inadvertently put into reverse. The vehicle rolled approximately fifteen feet as a witness ran to the Suzuki to assist the driver. Salgado then fled the vehicle on foot and ran towards Ruby Tuesday, 10509 Gibsonton Drive, where he entered the passenger side of a 2013 Honda Civic. The driver was standing at the trunk of his vehicle and immediately entered the driver's seat to prevent Salgado from stealing the car. The victim grabbed his keys from the ignition and was attempting to flee when Salgado grabbed the victim by his shirt and attempted to pull him back. A witness observed what was happening and attempted to assist the victim when Salgado fled on foot.
Salgado ran into a residential neighborhood, going down Rivercrest Drive to OakRidge Avenue, and attempted to enter several unoccupied vehicles and houses. Salgado was trying to enter an occupied home when Deputy Stuart Gray arrived. Salgado saw the deputy, armed himself with a brick and then attacked Deputy Gray. Deputy Gray, fearing for his life, drew and fired his weapon. Salgado was fatally wounded.
