On October 28, 2016 at approximately 3:25 p.m., Gilbert Lorenzo Escobedo was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck when he became involved in a verbal altercation started by Zachary Taylor Marcano on private property north of E. College Avenue on N. 30th Street. (This was not road rage, Escobedo and Marcano were acquaintances.) Escobedo, in an attempt to flee the altercation, drove away from the area by traveling north on 30th Street NE towards Shell Point Road. Escobedo was at a speed of approximately 70 mph, when he saw Marcano approaching from behind, riding a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle at a high rate of speed. Escobedo advised that Marcano drove along side of his truck and punched his driver's side rearview mirror before pulling in front of Escobedo as they were approximately 60 mph. Escobedo said as they approached the intersection of 19th Avenue NE, Marcano quickly downshifted and slowed rapidly. Escobedo said he was following too closely behind Marcano and was unable to stop. Escobedo then struck the rear of the motorcycle, causing Marcano to be ejected as both the motorcycle and Marcano slid into the intersection of 19th Avenue NE. A vehicle, driving west on 19th Street NE, then struck Marcano and his motorcycle. Marcano died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Escobedo, after striking the motorcycle, fled the scene of the crash, east on 19th Avenue NE and drove to his residence. His truck was later discovered at 12205 Glenshire Drive. A search and seizure warrant was completed and the Chevrolet truck was impounded for processing.
On October 29, 2016, Escobedo came forward to speak with detectives about what occurred. He was arrested and charged with one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Resulting in Death. He is currently being booked into Orient Road Jail.
