On September 14, 2016 at approximately 12:30 am, deputies responded to 1209 E. Camellia Drive in Brandon reference to a shots fired call. When deputies arrived, they entered the residence at which time they observed Donald Wood lying on the kitchen floor with a gun shot wound. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue paramedics assessed Donald Wood and declared him deceased at the scene.
At or about the same time, deputies also came in contact with another adult male inside the residence who had his hands up in the air and identified himself as the shooter. Deputies held the scene until homicide detectives arrived and executed a search warrant at the residence. The man identified as the shooter in this incident as well as other individuals who were inside the residence at the time of the shooting were interviewed by homicide detectives.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the owner of the single family three bedroom home rents out three of the bedrooms to separate individuals. Donald Wood and his girlfriend lived in one bedroom, the shooter lived in a second bedroom and another adult couple lived in the third bedroom.
Just prior to deputies being called to the residence, Donald Wood and his girlfriend were having a verbal argument in their bedroom. During the argument, the male who lived in the second bedroom heard the argument and walked into Donald Wood's bedroom. Donald Wood told the man to mind his own business as the argument then escalated out into the common area of the home. While the argument continued between Donald Wood, his girlfriend and the shooter, Wood walked to the kitchen and armed himself with a kitchen knife.
Donald Wood then reportedly took steps toward the male shooter and the shooter produced a handgun from behind his back and shot Wood at least once. Donald Wood died at the scene.
Once investigators have completed the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office who make a final legal determination on whether there is criminal liability or a case of self-defense.
The shooting subject was released and has not been charged pending the outcome of this investigation and ruling by the State Attorney's Office.
The couple living in the third bedroom were in their room at the time of the shooting and were not injured. Any and all other details are part of the active investigation and will not be released at this time. Next of kin has been notified.
The investigation continues.
