First Degree Murder
On April 11, 2017 at approximately 9:20 p.m., the defendant, Leopoldo Galarza-Espinosa, arrived at the victim's residence located at 3317 Willow Road in Ruskin. The victim, Santos Simiona Gonzalez-Lopez, and defendant were boyfriend and girlfriend and ended their relationship approximately three weeks ago. Galarza-Espinosa began banging on the front door, demanding entry into the residence. The victim initially refused, but ultimately opened the door for the defendant. The defendant entered the residence and began arguing
with the victim. During the argument, the defendant pulled a small semi-automatic handgun from his pocket, chambered a round and indicated to the victim that two people were going to die. The defendant shot the victim three times. The victim fell onto the bed and was later pronounced deceased by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. The defendant then shot himself in the head.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived on scene and located the victim unresponsive on the bed. The defendant was also on the bed. Patrol units attempted to locate a pulse on the victim's neck with nothing felt. The defendant was breathing, but not responding to the commands of law enforcement. The male subject spontaneously stated, "It's because I found her with someone else." The suspect repeated the statement and then asked if "she was ok." The suspect verbally identified himself and was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Galarza-Espinosa faces one count of First Degree Murder.
