On November 11, 2017 at approximately 5 p.m., Deputy Benjamin Thompson and Deputy Trent Migues responded to a single vehicle traffic crash with injuries at the intersection of Alexander Road North (State Road 39A), and Paul Buchman Highway (State Road 39).
While enroute, updates from the dispatcher stated the vehicle had entered a pond and was still occupied by the driver. When both deputies arrived, they entered the water and began removing the driver Leona Evans, 82, just moments before the vehicle completely submerged under the water.
During the rescue, Deputy Thompson suffered several lacerations to his face and arms from a window which had to be broken to remove Ms. Evans. Deputy Thompson was treated and released by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue while at the incident scene.
Evans was transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital as a trauma alert and is listed in serious condition. Both deputies have returned back to full duty today.
Florida Highway Patrol conducted the traffic crash investigation.
