On Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at approximately 9:45pm, deputies responded to a residence on Oakwood Drive in Thonotosassa reference a report that an attempted carjacking had just occurred. When deputies arrived, they met an adult female victim who indicated she was stepping out of her vehicle when an unidentified suspect wearing a tan short sleeve t-shirt and a rubber Halloween mask displayed a handgun and demanded the victim's keys to her vehicle. The victim refused to turn over her keys and she struck the unidentified suspect with her foot. The suspect then fired a single round into the victim's carport; however, the victim was not injured. The suspect then fled the scene on a Moped.
Approximately 45 minutes later, deputies responded to a reported shooting which occurred at the intersection of Pemberton Creek Drive and Muck Pond Road in Thonotosassa. When deputies arrived, they made contact with an adult male victim, who sustained one gun shot wound to his back. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury.
During the investigation detectives learned that an unidentified suspect wearing a gray t-shirt, black gym shorts, and an orange mask approached the victim in his vehicle. The suspect fired 3-4 shots towards the vehicle with one round striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene on foot and remains at large.
Deputies believe both incidents are connected and are following up on leads. At this time, we are not identifying the victims or their addresses. We are not releasing any other additional details during the early stages of this active investigation.
