False Report of Use of Firearm in a Violent Manner (felony)
On January 31, 2018, at approximately 10 pm, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was made aware of a social media Snapchat photo of an unknown white male holding a black assault rifle style firearm. A caption on the photo read, "Don't come to school tomorrow." The photo was re-shared through the Snapchat application several times and the original screen name was unreadable.
Through investigative means, deputies were advised the subject was possibly a Newsome High School ninth grade student. Deputies identified the student and responded to his residence. The student and his parents were cooperative and showed deputies the assault rifle, which was determined to be a very realistic Airsoft rifle.
Post Miranda warnings, the student admitted to taking the picture and posting it on Snapchat with the first caption. He said it was meant as a joke between his friends and was not going to hurt anyone. The student was arrested for false report to use firearms in a violent manner (second degree felony) and was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
